Hydro

The Lufubu hydropower project is located on Lufubu river in the districts of Mpulungu and Nsama in the Northern part of Zambia. A technical feasibility study was carried out by Studio Pietrangeli Consultants of Italy and completed in 2015. The study led to a decision to implement a Cascade project (three power plants) project with an installed capacity of 163MW at plant factor of 90% as a first stage development, which can later be expanded to 326MW when peaking power market is developed.

Furthermore, comprehensive geotechnical investigations were carried out at all the key infrastructure locations, results of which were incorporated in the EPC contract tender documentation. The three power plants will be interconnected at 132kV voltage level while the scheme power will be evacuated at 330kV transmission voltage level from the project substation to ZESCO's Mporokoso 330kV substation. The project is located in three traditional Chiefdoms, namely, Chief Chitimbwa of Mpulungu district, Senior Chief Nsama of Nsama district and Senior Chief Mumporokoso of Mporokoso district.
